Heritage UMC in D'Iberville has been active in helping its community recover
since
the first days after Hurricane Katrina. After running a distribution center that served over
1,500 persons
a day for an entire month, the pastor and the congregation
switched
their focus to long-term recovery, housing teams of volunteers coming to work.
Heritage has housed more than 28,156 volunteers - many sleeping in the sanctuary before the new dormitory was completed -
and logged nearly 555,000 hours of volunteer labor. And the volunteers are still coming, with groups scheduled through November of 2011.
The church built a new classroom addition,
which will now be used temporarily
as disaster recovery warehouse space.
With funding from two UMC Conferences in Indiana,
a volunteer dormitory has been completed.
The new dormitory has eight showers and a kitchen,
and is capable of housing up to 50 volunteers at a time.
In the year 2007 alone, over 3,000 Volunteers worked through HUMC.
What an outstanding way to witness to those affected by Hurricane Katrina!
Most recently the Katrina Recovery Committee has changed our focus from Katrina Recovery to a broader base in the community. The title of this mission effort will be “Heritage Gulf Coast Mission”. One of the primary foci of this mission is to continue to offer our dormitory to the church, district, conference, and greater connection as each engages ministry.’

The Dining Hall and Bunk Rooms are a welcome
change from palletes in any free space.

focus on the many repair requests still coming.
